“Damn, that’s a lot of white people” is not only what I thought at the beginning of this short, but is also uttered by the black female lead playing a police officer, once she has entered the ‘hallowed halls’ of a Yale university WASP society house - the film's crime scene. The logline reads: "Brett is lying dead in the back room of his Yale secret society. And now, a police officer wants to investigate Brett's alumni brothers after receiving a noise complaint."
Brett was a F*ck is a suspenseful ‘whodunit’ short that prods at the pervasiveness of patriarchal systems to test its foundation: it does not matter how ‘liberal’ or ‘progressive’ you might claim to be. If upholding its structure means it will help you get ahead, then these four old college friends sure as hell won’t end up in the yearbook under the superlative of ‘Most Likely to Make the World A Better Place’.
Brett was a F*ck is efficient and precise with its dialogue and pacing, carefully measured to pull the curtains at the correct time. I could definitely see this short as an instalment of a larger anthology series in the future. In fact, I really hope I do!
I highly recommend you go and watch it!
