For those of you who don't know, Cannes over the years has come under fire for the ratio of big studio films to indies – and this year, in the face of Donald Trump's world order, Cannes has turned back to international and independent small-scale cinema, and rebuffed the major American studios completely. I love this shift and am really going to enjoy seeing these films discussed and buzzed about soon.
First off, some housekeeping – there's one film missing from the Official Selection that has yet to be announced. I was sure it was going to be Digger, Alejandro González Iñárritu's upcoming mega-Warner Bros feature with Tom Cruise, but it seems they'll be opting out of festivals entirely. I vibe with this – leaving the kingmaker festivals to actually make kings – the film doesn't want festival help to gain momentum, I'm sure.
