Umnia El-Neil speaks to photographer and filmmaker Tzeli Hadjidimitriou about Lesvia, her documentary on the lesbian community of Skala Eressos on the Greek island of Lesvos.
Tzeli and Umnia talk about making the film across thirteen years, the difference between tolerance and acceptance, what it means to tell a story from inside your own community, and how a small village shaped by Sappho's legacy became a place of return, conflict, memory and refuge for queer women across generations.
They also get into the tension between archive and lived experience, the responsibility of filming people who already know you, and why Eressos still matters as both a real place and an imagined queer sanctuary.
Sophisticulture is a podcast for people who care a lot about stories and storytellers, and can be found on all major podcast platforms.
