The Playing Field

My big recommendation, new to UK cinemas this week, is Rose of Nevada โ€“ people may say it's not necessarily geared to our audience... I would massively disagree! With Callum Turner and George McKay, and directed by maverick filmmaker Mark Jenkin, it's a fascinating, slow, and very rich experience at the cinema.

Of course, the Michael movie, as well as Mother Mary and Exit 8, are out this week โ€“ we'll get back to you on those over the weekend.

Still in cinemas - Project Hail Mary, Super Mario Galaxy, The Drama, The Mummy, California Schemin', The Magic Faraway Tree, and Glenrothan.

My Father's Shadow, and Sound of Falling are now on MUBI.

OBSCURAE Recommends

Rose of Nevada. You can even watch my interview with Callum Turner at TIFF here!

Rose of Nevada: Yo. What?
In the trippiest Cornish fever dream, Jenkin communicates the intergenerational dread of dying towns.

I think we'll go with the underdog here and recommend Blue Heron!

Gentle, aching, and unforgettable, Blue Heron is a dreamlike story of memory, family, and grief.

I wish I had a better idea of what's going on in Canadian cinema right now, but my browser somehow wants to lock me out of the listings page for "security reasons"????
