I have been chasing down this film since SXSW London last year, and I'm so glad it's finally coming to theatres in the UK. Lesbian Space Princess is a hilarious, absurd, proudly quirky and heartfelt queer adventure film in which our heroine, Saira, must save her ex-girlfriend from a terrible fate.

Set in a world rich with gay space lore and fascinating real-world connections, this is an incredibly funny film that literally had my belly aching with laughter, featuring tender, brilliant musical interstitials and a wonderfully Australian sense of humour. This is the kind of film people may build their entire personality around once they see it. At its heart is a story about self-respect and self-love, and our heroine is put through the hardest trials one can face when they are struggling to see their worth.

Not to overstate it, but this film does not take itself too seriously. It has important things to say, but it does so with levity, comedy, and a sense of whimsy that I think has been really lacking in recent queer media, yet is starting to break through as more of us find that inner battery of joy in the ways we approach these stories.

The film felt like it graduated from the lineage of animated media such as Steven Universe, Rick & Morty, and a touch of Sailor Moon, all wrapped up in a gorgeous, Sapphic bow. Though definitely not a kids' movie, it is certainly a fun one for teens, especially queer teens, and especially lesbian teens. Some of the one-liners are infinitely quotable and will immediately enter my day-to-day lexicon.

An unbeatable date-night movie, not just for the Sapphics, but for us all!

Oh, and REUBEN KAYE CAMEO!

Lesbian Space Princess will be in UK Cinemas from 19th June!
